Chronic Pain

21 March 2013

I was 45 years old when I discovered that not everyone experiences constant pain. Only took me 35 years from the onset if JRA to figure that out. I think I liked being in the dark.

I have three pain causing medical issues; rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and hemiplegic migraines. Kaylan had frequent pain from IBS and I suspect that she had AS like me because of her sometimes debilitating sacrum pain. I wish I had known about self-care when my kids were growing up but I didn't learn it until the past few years. Now I know that taking a 10 minute rest with a heating pad on my back can keep me from sinking into a severe pain cycle. Pain and depression are linked which makes sense to me. The ugly fact of not being able to move about the world is very depressing but life skills and self-care help so much.
