It Takes One to Know One
Have you ever heard of Marsha Linehan, Ph.D.? What about Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D.? Mary Ellen Copeland, Ph.D.? Don't feel bad if you have not heard of them. They are not super famous, but they are all super women. They are badass warriors of the takes-one-to-know-one school of psychological research. They are all brilliant, broken, yet brave enough to say SO WHAT IF I HAVE MENTAL ILLNESS?
These three women have taken so much flack for daring to research and publish about illnesses they have themselves. Because everyone knows that a physician who has lived through cancer can't possibly treat cancer patients - oh wait, nobody would say that... that would be stupid. Exactly.
These three women have changed the discourse on acceptance and recovery. Brava ladies!
We are no longer living in the asylum. People are coming out right and left with mental illness. We are owning our experiences and showing our scars. I hope this trend continues and leads to a permanent cure for suicide attempts. I hope.
